If you have had a daughter for any amount of time, then you understand the meaning of beauty in a unique way. As the curls appear in her hair on her 1st birthday, or the glimmer in her eyes every time she smiles at you. That beauty grows deeper through the years as she learns how to read, fumbles her way through riding a bike and feeling comfortable in her own skin. And you get a front row seat to all of this. You speak into her words of love, confidence and worth. You sit with her through the fears, friend trouble and figuring out what she wants to do with her life.

So what does that have to do with wedding dresses you ask?

Good question! Typically daughters are merely a thought of the future on mamas wedding day, And if they are, then that makes the day all the more sweet. I know I dreamt of what sharing life with my daughter would be like as she was growing and developing. The mommy daughter dates we would go on, the movies I would introduce to her, and the personality I would get to know in her as she grows up. As moms we are the first to know our children, to bond with them and create a sacred connectedness. That connection between mothers and daughters is powerful, influential and plays a significant part in shaping a young woman into who they are.

There is a lot shared too. Ice cream treats, opinions and feelings, oh and eventually shoes! One thing I swoon over every time I hear about it, is when daughters wear their mother or grandmothers wedding dress or get to be the one who receives moms ring as they start their own family. Well, if my guess is right, the wearing of mom or grandmas wedding dress is something fading away like all the Blockbuster stores we used to walk to as kids. It made me think, why do we need to wait till our girls are in their 20s or 30’s to share with them the sacredness and beauty of our wedding day and invite them into our love story.

I don’t know if I got to try on my mom’s wedding dress, but when I offered to let my 5 year old try on mine a few years ago, I was not ready for what it did to my heart! It had been 10 years since my own wedding so seeing the dress itself re-ignited memories of that day and now my girl was in it, beaming and taking in what probably felt like a gown she could have only dreamed of.

I paused, trying to take in the moment that I knew would pass before I would be ready to let it go. There she was, my sweet girl, my mini me in a dress that symbolized the beginning of the family she was the first addition too. It reminded me of the night we brought her home from the hospital and I held her tiny hand as I imagined twenty something years in the future as she walks down the aisle. The once tiny fingers now grown and holding her dads as she makes her way toward her own love.

Those moments come and dwell every now and then, but what I and other moms spend the majority of our time in are the day to day interactions, the seeing beauty develop outward as well as inward and affirming it every chance we get. She is worthy of love, she is confident, she is capable. As we wrestle with our own anxieties and fears, we are trusted with guiding a “little version of ourselves” through all the stages of life. Giving her a blueprint of how she should see herself, what to believe in and how to interact with the complex world around her.

Ok, I’ll give you a sec to go grab some tissues and we’ll get back to wedding dresses.

Are you good? Great! I’ll get to the reason I wanted you here, and that is the session I dreamed up this year as my girls asked about when I married their daddy and every time my daughter snuck into our room to wear one of my dresses. The moments together are evolving and changing. I want to bring the into more of my story and who I am as they build and write each new chapter of their own story.
